Clan: Kelch (CL0002)

Summary

Kelch repeat Add an annotation

The kelch repeat is a ubiquitous element that typically occurs in four to seven repeats. The sequence identity between individual kelch repeats is low. However, there are eight key conserved residues, which include a distinctive double glycine. The structure of a fungal galactose oxidase reveals a seven blade beta-propeller, with each blade comprised of seven kelch repeats. Each kelch repeat or blade forms a four strand beta sheet [1,2]. Kelch repeat containing proteins are involved in many aspects of cell function, which include; actin-associated proteins, cell morphology and organisation, gene expression, viral binding partners and extracellular roles [1].

This clan contains 3 families and the total number of domains in the clan is 8946.

Structures

For those sequences which have a structure in the Protein DataBank, we use the mapping between UniProt, PDB and Pfam coordinate systems from the MSD group, to allow us to map Pfam domains onto UniProt three-dimensional structures. The table below shows the mapping between the Pfam families in this clan, the corresponding UniProt entries, and the region of the three-dimensional structures that are available for that sequence.
